Information to upgrade a PowerBook 140 daughter board to 170 daughterboard.
Here is what you need:
1. Motorola MC68030-25, QFP package
2. Motorola MC68882-25, PLCC package
3. 50.00 MHz surface mount oscillator
4. 100k 1/10w resistor surface mount
5. 1.0uH inductor surface mount
6. 0.1uF capacitor surface mount
7. 470 1/10w resistor surface mount
Here is what you do:
1. Remove the microprocessor and install the new MC68030 (top side of board)
2. Add the MC68882 (bottom side of board)
3. Move the 31.xx oscillator from G2 to G3 (top side of board)
4. Add 50 MHz oscillator to G2 (top side of board)
5. Add 100k to R47 (bottom side of board)
6. Add 1.0uH to L7 (bottom side of board)
7. Add 1.0uF to C34
8. Move R60 to R59 (top side of board)
9. Move R51 to R52 (bottom side of board)
10. Add 470 to R44 (bottom side of board)
If you don't have access to a hot air surface mount repair station, DON'T try this yourself. The pins of the 68030 are spaced 0.025 inches. Without the correct equipment damage occurs to the components and the board. Cost of 68030-25 in single quantities goes for about $200, the 68882-25 is about $100. Note these are the micro versions. The 50 MHz oscillator is about $20.00. The remainder are inexpensive.
If you want to speed up the current chip on the board and not replace it, use one of the services available listed in MacWorld or MacUser.
Adding the coprocessor to the board makes the 140 show up as a 170.
If you change out only the faster processor and add the coprocessor without doing the other changes you cannot install the faster clock chip WITHOUT making the changes necessary for the I/O--other wise your floppy drive will not work and Appletalk will not work.
I do not have sources for any of the above nor do I want to do this work myself. You might try Digi-key, Fox, etc for the parts. For the work and the parts try MicroDOC (503-344-5335) or Soft Solutions (503-461-1136), the latter also sells hot air tools and manuals, parts, etc. Both MicroDOC and Soft Solutions are in Eugene, Oregon and are experts at Mac repairs.
